More NYC Stupidity

With no offense intended to all my NYC friends, of course. Some tosser with the NYPD has asked the City Council to give the police the power to authorize people in New York City to possess environmental testing devices, and provide for criminal prosecution of persons possessing such equipment without permission. Air quality meters, chemical sniffers, Geiger counters. It appears that the NYPD would even be licensing smoke detectors, radon test kits, and carbon monoxide monitors. And anyone merely possessing these things without permission could go to jail. The justification for this invidious tidbit of legislation is the fear that unregulated [ . . . ]

The Office of the President

The President of the United States is not a man, but an office occupied by a man. And the office carries only those powers enumerated in Article II of the Constitution of the United States. §1 The Executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America. . . . §2 The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States; he may require the Opinion, in writing, of the principal Officer in each of the executive [ . . . ]

A Kick In The Globes

NBC and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association have canceled this year’s Golden Globes awards ceremony, because the SAG actors decided they weren’t going to show up, on account of their “respect” for the WGA strike. HFPA will simply announce the winners at some point, with no pomp or circumstance involved. By canceling the show and announcing the winners, HFPA is letting the SAG actors eat their cake (by giving them their awards) and have it, too (by caving in to their protest of the awards show). If I were HFPA, I’d have postponed it instead. That way, they could keep the [ . . . ]

Sterca Sanctus

I expected Huckabee would turn out on top of the Republican caucuses in Iowa. He won’t do so well in New Hampshire, at least. I’ve always said Huckabee was more frightening to me for the ideological trends he represents, not for the possibility that he might be elected. And I still am not too worried about that. What is interesting to me is Obama’s victory in the Democratic caucuses. The two most religious candidates won in Iowa. The eleven month long, slow-motion train wreck begins! Fortunately, Iowa has been off the mark as a November predictor for the past few cycles. I hope those ideological [ . . . ]

Kathy & Andy

Kathy Griffin co-hosted New Year’s Eve at Times Square with Anderson Cooper on CNN last night. And she claims to be D-List. That’s a squarely C-List activity. Kathy tried her hardest to get Anderson fired, at one point asking him who, in the current administration, he would most enjoy waterboarding. Of course we all know Anderson’s position on waterboarding (even though he never really comes out and says it), so he was quite perturbed, refused to answer, and accused Kathy of “crossing the line.” To which Ms Griffin responded by looking at the camera and saying, “That’s what I’m here for!” [ . . . ]

Oh, Alex III

Mr Trebek had a minor heart attack at his home yesterday. He is recovering in hospital, and intends to continue hosting Jeopardy! when it resumes taping in January. I wish him well, and look forward to many more awkward contestant interviews in the future.
