Fantasy can be wonderful if it's done right. The books really are quite marvelous, considering. The problem with a lot of fantasy adaptations is that the books are often thick and juicy, while the movies always come off as rather anemic. That is indeed what I meant.

None of us -- wife, 9 year old and I liked it too much. (None of us has read the books.) I was a bit bored by the high melodrama-to-drama ratio. My son says he liked it, but I can tell it wasn't super-great for him either. I found the plot to be jerky and unconvincing; it's like they never really showed the characters thinking anything though (probably what you meant by "she'd read the book").
